That’s it. I’m done with Tumblr. For a reason.
As of today the new MOApp weblog is powered by my own LogEngine. LogEngine is my very own version of a dead simple weblog engine. As simple as b2 once was. It’s nothing I can make available for others for now. I wouldn’t even call it an alpha yet. But it’s already working for the AZLog and null816 and I’ve also my own App for OS X and the most important part:
I own it! I own its API and it’s my content. It’s stored on my own server.
Of course, the old Tumblog is still available and remains available. Simply because of the Daily Ollerum and the Daily Snippets and some quotes and news regarding my own Apps and plans…
Because of the recent changes to the Tumblr API their own tool to backup your Tumblog isn’t working anymore. But there is another way to backup all your content - at least as a webarchive:
tumble-log Backup Jammy
As already said before (and before and before) - I’m sick and tired of companies changing the rules and APIs and forcing those who helped making their service big and successful to either comply or to die.
Well, I chose to die.
As of today myTumblr does not work anymore and I was not granted access to their new API because they changed the rules afterwards.
I’m sorry that the App no longer works for you as it did for years before without any trouble. There can’t and won’t be an update. Sorry.
I know it sucks and because I myself hate being forced to use the crappy web interface to blog (for any service) - I’m also searching for option to migrate this tumblog into my own weblog engine. This may take a while but I don’t like to be treated that way from companies.
I still like the idea of Tumblr and I understand why they act like they act and for new and unestablished Apps I don’t have a single problem with it - but for old (or the first Apps) it doesn’t have to be this way. Or better: it shouldn’t.
It was fun and now it’s over…
With Tumblr, it often takes more energy than it should. It takes two to tango, and Tumblr doesn’t dance.

His App, MarsEdit, can also be used to post to Tumblr – just like my myTumblr. And both Apps use the old Tumblr API. Both for a reason. And now this old API is not working anymore, because Tumblr quietly and without ‘warning’ changed it.
And I even can’t update myTumblr to the new API – because Tumblr does not allow me to do so. They changed their policy. Apps are no longer allowed to use Tumblr in their name. Not even Apps, that have used it for years before.
Currently I am not sure what to do about that. And honestly, I am getting tired of companies behaving that way. And because we here in Germany don’t need to be political correct – I even can say I am pissed. Tumblr is, of course, not the first, the only and also will not be the last company rendering hundreds and thousands hours of work useless, just because they can…

Definitely one of the best tumblogs ever :-)

I’ve just released a new update for myTextPost – The text post publishing tool for serious tumblogger.
This updates improves the GUI, simplifies the creation of new posts, offers completely new Preferences and fixes some glitches.
BTW – there are still a chance to win a free license!

I’ve just published an update for the all new myTextPost – The text post publishing tool for serious tumblogger.
An even if it has a small version number – it is a big update with lots of improvements and the biggest new feature is a really improved WYSIWYG experience. You can now write your awesome new posts the same way you are used to from myWritings or Pages for example.
Drag and drop photos, apply formatting like bold, italic or insert lists and blockquotes etc.
And this will also works, when you need to edit an already published post or a draft.
But please notice:
Working with an WYSIWYG editor like myTextPost and mixing up Rich Text, HTML and Markdown formatting in one text, sending that text to the Tumblr API, which does its own re-formatting and converting that back into a format that you can edit again with Rich Text, HTML and Markdown, to send it again to the Tumblr API which (again) does its own…
Well – as you can imagine, there is lots of room for possible errors and bugs.
I’ve done my best to avoid such errors and to ensure that most formatting is preserved and plays nice with Tumblr – but I simply can’t catch out every possibility you may have used with another client/editor or while using the web interface.
Basic formatting like line breaks, links, images, simple lists, bold, italic, strike, blockquotes etc. should work fine.
In case of any trouble, try enabling alternative formatting in Preferences and please use the integrated feedback tool, so I can improve it.
BTW – there is still a chance to get a license for free :–)

Yes, 25 x my all new App for serious blogging with Tumblr for free!
All you have to do is to just reblog this post, send me the link together with a valid (!) email address and I will put your name into a bowl and with some luck Ollerum will pick you – he loves doing that!
OK – you may want to test myTextPost – The text post publishing tool for serious tumblogger – first. Because it is not the ‘typical’ App for Tumblr some may expect. If you need a typical Tumblr App – you should have have a look at myTumblr instead.
But maybe you will like myTextPost as much as I do
– I am writing all my Tumblr posts since weeks with myTextPost
Especially those for +Z and of course this one as well.
About myTextPost
Yes, I know – some WP user will smile. But there are so many people out there, using Tumblr for much more than re-blogging annoying GIFs. Mind the New Yorker-Tumblr for example.
And for us the Apps with ‘pro’ features for writing text posts – well, there is not a single one out there. Even my own myTumblr lacks some features serious blogger sometimes may need.
That’s why I’ve written a completely new App for Mac for all out there, using Tumblr for writing awesome articles and entries.
TextPost is – well, for text posts:–)
And nothing else – but text posts. It supports simple formatting like bold or italic, you can use HTML or even Markdown and open existing Text, HTML and Markdown Documents – thus you can even pre-write your articles with an App like myTexts pro.
Unfortunately the Tumblr API does not allow to simply insert/upload photos into a text post for third party Apps – but don’t worry. TextsPost supports CloudApp, FTP or simply insert a photo URL. Currently myTextPost is the only App available for blogging with Tumblr allowing you to easily insert photos. Hopefully Tumblr will change the API in the future.
Of course you can preview the text you are working on at any time. Published posts can also be ‘web-previewed’ at any time without leaving the App and because blogging often means to work with web-finds, other articles etc. – I’ve extra added support for our Read It Later bookmarks with built-in preview.
Because we often find a typo or have to re-write a paragraph the moment we’ve published a text – the text one is currently working on is automatically saved and even available after publication – so editing a published post is a piece of cake.
And of course you can also access already published posts and because many of you really use the draft feature, they can also be accessed with ease.
Please note, that this is the first version – thus feedback is highly appreciated :–)
